The Cadre Webcomic

Lots of things are brewing here again at Nifty HQ. One of the biggest things is the release of the Cadre as a webcomic. That’s right, now you can get all of the adventures of the Cadre in an all-new, absolutely free super hero web comic format. The strip updates every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  The first story arc is written by yours truly, Mat Nastos, with art by me and Top Cow megastar, Kenneth Rocafort (Madam Mirage, Hunter Killer).  If you love super heroes, or if you just love free online super hero comics, then you should make sure to drop by three times a week to check it out.  The strip can be found at: http://www.niftycomics.com/blog/cadre/

More updates later in the week as Nifty Comics gets ready for convention season!

News: New Nifty Comics feature in BNA Magazine

Excitement abounds here at Nifty Comics HQ this month!

In addition to our recent announcement on picking up rights to the Aircel Comics library of material, Nifty Comics will have its very own feature in BNA Magazine here in the San Gabriel Valley of California.  Beginning in September 2009, BNA Magazine will be bringing its 40,000+ readership the “Nifty Corner,” a kid-friendly column with art, games, puzzles and whatever else we can come up with — all starring Nifty Comics characters and put together by Nifty Comics creator, Mat Nastos.

Check out the first installment below!

Until next time, it’s back to the drawing board.

The Nifty News: Nifty Comics Returns with the Cadre and Aircel Comics!

Yes, yes.  I know, I know.  Nifty Comics has been on hold for waaaay too long.  As most of you know, I took a break from publishing back in 2008 because I had quite a bit of television and film work come in, most of it for Disney TV Animation.  Then, earlier this year, the hiatus continued while I worked on a film of my own.  For me, in spite of the success we’ve had with the Cadre and the large numbers of comics we sold, Nifty Comics has always been my “fun” job.  This is what I do to take a break from the real world and to get back to doing what I have a true passion for.  I never wanted to push Nifty to the point where it became a “real job” for me because I always worried about it not being fun any more.

With all that being said, I have decided to pick the publishing back up and get it going full bore again.  Later this year the Cadre will pick back up with a regular series (either quarterly or bi-monthly, I haven’t decided yet).  The next six issues are in the can and ready to go, so we’ll see some nice consistency for a while.  We’ll have at least one new trade out and ready early next year.

On top of that, Nifty Comics will be heading into the realm of fantasy comics with a book written by my good friend (and former Marvel Comics Bullpen Artist), Marc Morrell, and draw by the fantastic Will Perkins.   We haven’t nailed down the final title for the comic, but it stars a different sort of wizard named Rhemmiel.  It’s good stuff and the art by Will is cool as hell.

Finally, and this is probably the biggest news for the company.  I’m announcing it first here for those long-time Nifty Comics fans and will be following up with a proper press release later in the week.  Nifty Comics has acquired tall rights to the Aircel Comics publishing library.  For those of you who weren’t around comics in the 80s or early 90s, Aircel was one of the leading black and white comic book publishers and introduced the world to the first work of such gifted comic creators as Barry Blair, Dale Keown, Pat McEown and Guang Yap.  Over their time in the industry, Aircel published hundreds of comics, including Elflord, Warlock 5, Samurai, Dragonring/Dragonforce, Gun Fury, the Walking Dead, Maelstrom, Leather & Lace and Warlocks.

We’re going to be restoring and reprinting a whole slew of the Aircel Comics material and will also be producing new material.  The most exciting news, at least for me, is the chance to get to work with my good friend and mentor, Barry Blair, on some of that new material.  We’re going to be putting out Barry’s first US comic work in a long time and it’s looking to be some amazing stuff.

Keep an eye on this space in the upcoming weeks for more information and on how to be a part of the fun here at Nifty Comics.

Comic Book Marketing Techniques: Combat Customer Apathy – Ignore customers at your own risk

Keeping Your Readers Coming Back – A Primer

Hey there, guys and gals.  It’s Mat Nastos back again with another bit of marketing advice for your indie comic book publishing adventures.  Today I’m going to talk about how to keep from losing your audience while you are making it grow.

Stan Lee is a genius.  Everyone in the comic book industry knows it.  Unfortunately, most people don’t realize his true genius lies outside of having created Spider-man, the Hulk, the X-men and the Marvel Universe itself.  The real force behind the genius of Stan Lee was that he knew the reason why most businesses lose customers.

I know what you’re saying to yourself right now.  You’re saying, What in the hell are you talking about, Mat, and what on Earth does it have to do with drawing the Wolverine?”  Truth be told, it has absolutely nothing to do with drawing the Wolverine and absolutely everything to do with why a lot of comic book publishers lose sales after their first issue and, eventually, cancel their comics.

The major reason why comic book publishers (and businesses in general) lose business is because of customer apathy.  In other words, most comic book publishers are chasing away customers by ignoring them after the initial sale.  Marketing experts estimate that over 65 percent of all business lost in the US is from apathy after the sale.  And even back at the beginning of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee knew this. (Read the rest of the article at http://comicbookmarketing.com/)

Comic Book Marketing, Part VII: Getting your affiliate program started

Since I started this series of articles on marketing for comic book publishers I’ve been getting email questions from my readers (and watchers of the new videos). The most common question from comic publishers and creators so far is “What is an affiliate program and how do I get one started?” I hope to answers those questions in today’s video post.
